Situated in the ancient Magaliesberg Mountains we are fortunate to have three beautiful hiking trails on the property for you to explore. These scenic hikes wind through the varied environments on the Southern slope of the mountains, starting in the lowlands, climbing through indigenous woodland before gaining the escarpment above the huge cliffs. All of the trails are circular and start/ finish at GoVertical Backpackers Lodge.
Well maintained and clearly marked, we invite you to explore this protected 'Green zone' on the border of the North West Province and Gauteng. The hiking trails vary in length from 5 km - 10 km and you are welcome to hike these circular routes by yourselves. Alternatively, book a guided hike where our well informed mountain guides will be able to weave the ancient geology, unique plant life, curious creatures and colourful history into a vivid tapestry that is the Magaliesberg.
WOODLAND ROUTE - 5 km This trail is perfect for a leisurely walk, it has great views of the spectacular Magaliesberg cliffs.
The trees you're most likely to encounter are White Stinkwood, Wild & False Olive, Knob wood and if you're hiking in January the scent from the wild gardenia is beautiful.
Tread quietly and you may encounter the Common Duiker, Vervet monkeys, chameleons & dassies and a variety of birds.
Perfect for young family members, new walkers & anyone wanting to relax & perhaps picnic in the shade.
CRAG ROUTE - 8 km Following this hiking trail brings you up close to the towering Magaliesberg cliffs. The route traverses through indigenous woodland and past impressive mountain caves.
New Years Cave is a giant overhang where many birds and mammals come for refreshment from the cool water that seeps through moss covered rock.
Winding through the forest this is a great choice for summer, listen out for the Red billed Wood Hoopoes as they laugh off the heat of the day & the Red breasted cuckoos as they call out 'Piet-my-vrou' The trail joins the descent path at the stone wall fortification built in the early 1900's
SUMMIT ROUTE 10 km Leaving the dry forest environment behind, wind your way through the open woodland with its plentiful Mountain Proteas also known as the Suikerbos tree and up over the cliffs to the escarpment. Once at the top all the hard work is over as the trail flattens out, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy the fantastic view.
The trail follows the crest of the mountains, with impressive views over 'Die Moot' to the South and out towards Groenkloof and Brits on the Northern side. Glancing down over the cliffs you may spot the dainty Klipspringer, Mountain rhebok, baboons and rock dassies. Don't forget to raise your eyes to the sky and perhaps the resident Black Eagles or the Cape Vultures will glide silently above you.
Options to visit the view site and old Anglo Boer war fortifications extend the standard trail. Find a spot amongst the whimsical quartzite rocks, protected 'Turks Cap' aloes, gorgeous Royal paintbrushes and hardy resurrection plants to enjoy your picnic, before descending through the heather.
