From the Royal Natal National Park we explore the Tugela Gorge with its massive overhangs & beautiful rock pools. This trail exposes tremendous views when you gaze up at the Sentinel, Amphitheatre and Devils tooth as the path winds along the river course. Once we are near the top of the gorge, near the base of the Tugela Falls, we will stop for a traditional hikers packed lunch. Relax next to the clean clear waters of the Thukela River.

Your option for Vertical adventure begins after lunch. The highlight of this stunning walk is the abseil we set up at the top of the gorge. The freefall abseil is into one of the bigger river pools and quite a thrill! During winter, the abseil has a totally dry landing, so there's no need to get cold in the icy mountain water, but in summer you have the option of taking a dip in a fresh mountain stream.  After a stretch of boulder hopping and exploration in the gorge, we rejoin the path and wind our way back along the river.

TUGELA GORGE HIKE AND ABSEIL

Tugela Gorge framing Devils Tooth

The trail passes the mighty Sentinel, the highest free standing peak in the Northern Drakensberg, countouring the way to the base of the chain ladders. We use these iron ladders to gain access to the Mont-Aux-Sorces Plateau, sorce of many of South africa’s rivers including the Tugela which winds its way down to the Indian Ocean near Durban

From the edge of the Drakensberg, there are spectacular views of the Amphitheatre starting from the Sentinel, curving round to Devils Tooth and Eastern Buttress including the Tugela falls which disappears into the vast valleys below.  This sensitive & pristine wilderness area is an absolute must in the Drakensberg.  EMAIL US FOR DETAILS Bookings
